Wage theft IR Reforms and managing risk - ON-DEMAND

This on-demand session is available to watch instantly after purchase at the time of your choosing and will expire within 12 Months of purchase.

Date recorded: November 2023

This session will delve into a major industrial relations reform dealing with ‘wage theft’.  Underpayment of wages has been a hot topic with many major employers coming under the spotlight of the Fair Work Ombudsman, and the media, with large underpayment claims and fines.

The role of an employer’s internal or external accountant is critical in reducing the risk of underpayment of wages and in the process to report and resolve claims.  With significant reforms looming, including the criminalising of ‘wage theft’ and increased fines, employers and their accountants need to understand their obligations and manage risk.

Topics Covered:

  • The current penalties and the proposed reforms to criminalise ‘wage theft’ and increase fines
  • Key provisions of Awards and EAs
  • Contract of employment offset clauses
  • Use of annualised salaries
  • Payroll record keeping – FWC expectations
  • Audits, remedies and voluntary disclosure of underpayment of wages

Benefits & Learning Outcomes:

Participants will gain a better understanding of how they can assist their clients to reduce the risk of underpayments and manage situations when they occur. Participants will be able to develop a checklist and action plan for their clients to identify and manage risky situations prior to the introduction of the reforms.

Recommended for:

Accountants who work in payroll, assist with preparation of contracts of employment or who may be required to calculate underpayment claims.
